A company called Brighton Bazaar Inc. of Brooklyn is recalling 1.3 kilogram containers of Treknas Atlantic Herring after it was found that the guts weren’t cut out prior to processing.

The recall was announced by the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets after a routine inspection of the product and subsequent testing of the fish found that it had not been “eviscerated.”

Uneviscerated fish has the potential to be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that can cause death. It’s illegal to sell such fish in New York state.

Consumers are being warned not to eat the fish even if it doesn’t smell spoiled. Uneviscerated fish have been linked to outbreaks of Botulism poisoning. Symtoms include blurred or double vision, weakness, poor reflexes, difficulty swallowing and respiratory paralysis.

The Treknas Atlantic Herring is packaged in a round plastic container.

Brighton Bazaar is an ethnic supermarket store, deli and buffet located in Brighton Beach in Brooklyn.

Jessica Chittenden Ziehm, a spokeswoman for Ag & Markets, didn’t have a distribution list for the product, but she did confirm that it not just sold at Brighton Bazaar. She said that it’s possible it could be sold at specialty food stores anywhere throughout the state.

These aren’t small containers of herring. A 1.3 kilogram container weighs almost 3 pounds.

No illnesses have been reported yet.
