PUMPOUT STATIONS

Boaters have more to lose than most people if local waterways are polluted, and there's no reason to dump human waste overboard now that pumpout stations have become more common.

Pumpouts at public marinas are usually free, while private marinas charge up to $25 for the service. Southampton (Ch. 73) and Huntington (Ch. 9) even have free pumpout boats that will come to you to empty your sewage holding tank.

It is illegal to empty untreated waste in coastal waters.

In designated no-discharge zones, not even treated waste may be discharged.

Here is a listing of pumpout stations throughout Long Island. Call ahead to check fees and hours.

RACING WITH THE WINDS

Whatever the appeal of power boats, sailcraft can stir the imagination more. Leaning into the wind, spinnaker billowing, the sailor experiences much the same surge of motion felt by the earliest people roaming the seas. Numerous Long Island yacht clubs shelter various sailing vessels and schedule regattas that test sailing skills. Most of the major races can be viewed comfortably by boat, but a few afford shore vantage points.

AROUND LONG ISLAND REGATTA. Sponsored by Cablevision. Host club is Sea Cliff Yacht Club, 671-7348. Longest race in LI waters. Starts from Rockaway, circles Long Island and ends at Hempstead Harbor. When: July 29-31. Distance: 200 miles. Fee: $110.

DEVON CHALLENGE. Sponsored by Devon Yacht Club, 283-6613. Amagansett to Watch Hill Road Island and back. When: July 24. Distance: 60 miles. Fee: $25.
